NUFD to conduct live fire drill on Saturday
NEW ULM - The New Ulm Volunteer Fire Department will be conducting a live fire drill on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 25549 Boundary Street, New Ulm. The drill's purpose is to allow firefighters to practice their skills in a realistic burn scenario.
The drill will start at about 8 a.m. with a series of 15 small-scale live burns. During this time firefighters will be lighting a controllable size fire in a room on the third floor of a building. A team of five firefighters will advance to this area and extinguish the fire. They will then ventilate and overhaul the room to make sure the fire did not extend to other areas. The burns will continue until all 15 burns are completed, which should take until between 11 a.m. and noon.
At that point, the department will light several areas on the first floor that will eventually consume the entire building. During this time firefighters will continue working on their skills including hose streams and protecting the exposures surrounding the building.
