GREENVILLE, Ill. - The Martin Luther College football team was unable to slow down a powerful Greenville College team in a 56-6 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference loss Saturday.
The Panthers took control of the game from the start, scoring on a pair of first quarter drives to take a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
After a third Panther touchdown, the Knights scored their only touchdown of the game with just over six minutes to play in the second quarter, as Luke Rothe found Micah Plocher for a 49-yard score to cut the deficit to 21-6.
Greenville was too much, however, as the Panthers scored twice more to end the first half, and then more times in the second half to get the final margin.
Rothe finished with 219 yards and one touchdown passing. Plocher was his leading target, catching four passes for 78 yards and the touchdown, while Matt Olson led the team with 50 yards rushing on 17 carries.
MLC dropped to 1-3 on the season and 1-2 in the UMAC in defeat, while Greenville improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in league play with the win.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, October 5, when they host Iowa Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
Women's soccer defeats Crown 4-1
NEW ULM - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team earned its third win of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference season by the score of 4-1 against Crown Saturday.
The Knights scored three goals in the first half to take a 3-0 lead heading into the break. Lauren Maertz got things started off a pass from Bethany Schultz in the 17th minute, and then Schultz scored a pair of goals herself in the half to give her eight on the season.
The Storm scored to cut the MLC lead to 3-1 just 45 seconds into the second half, but Jenna Maurer added the final insurance goal off a pass from Schultz in the 67th minute to give the Knights the final 4-1 margin. The goal was Maurer's eighth on the season, tying her with Schultz for first in the UMAC.
MLC finished with a 26-11 edge in shots, as Maertz, Schultz and Maurer combined for 18 of the 26 for the Knights. Keely Keese was strong in goal for the Knights, stopping eight of the nine shots she faced to earn her fifth win of the season.
MLC improved to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the UMAC with the win, while Crown dropped to 2-4-1 on the season and 0-3-1 in league play with the loss.
The Knights will return to action on Friday, Oct. 4, when they host Northland in a match scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m.
