Eagle Update

October 1, 2013
By Jeff Bertrang - ISD 88 Superintendent , The Journal

One month of the school year is complete. Students are in routines and our staff has had a chance to get to know their students. The first month is important for us to set expectations and connect with the students. I encourage parents to continue to communicate with their student and the teachers throughout the school year. The connections between home and school are so important. High School conferences are scheduled for October 10th and 15th. The elementary conferences will be held in November.

The school board approved the proposed 2014 payable tax levy last week. The overall levy is recommended to be at $6,200,464, an increase over the 2013 levy of $46,246, or less than 1%. The board will hold the annual levy certification meeting on December 19th at 6:30 pm in the boardroom at the District Administrative Center. At this meeting, the public has an opportunity to speak with the board about the levy and their tax impact.

It is homecoming week for New Ulm Public Schools. There are many events at each of the schools throughout the week. We encourage all of the students to get involved and have a great time while making smart and safe choices. These are the events our students remember years after they are done with school.

We appreciate the work NUACT did to get chairs donated for the auditorium. The cushioned chairs will be installed in the middle section, replacing the wood chairs. We anticipate completion of the installation in the next month. NUACT occasionally uses the auditorium for their performances and was looking for a way to make performances more enjoyable for their audiences.

The school board continues to investigate future facility needs at each of our school sites. Future programming requirements, community needs, safety of staff and students and shared opportunities for all schools are under consideration. In the next few weeks our staff will work with architects and engineers to discuss needs and evaluate current space and requirements. Key to this process will be getting community input and direction. We will be sending out more information in the coming months about the direction the board is heading.

Go Eagles!
