NEW ULM - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team lost 8-1 to St. Scholastica Saturday in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action.
The Knights were unable to avoid several scoring runs by the Saints, allowing the high-powered CSS offense to take control as the game went along.
MLC trailed 1-0 early in the game, but Ryan Lemke tied the game in the 13th minute to give the Knights some momentum. The goal was Lemke's team-leading fifth of the season.
The Saints responded, however, scoring in the 23rd minute to take the lead, and then scoring three times in a span of 3:35 starting at the 31:31 mark of the first half to take command of the game.
Eric Hahn stopped 17 shots in goal for the Knights, while Lemke and Nathan Graumann each had two shots.
Women's Soccer Falls to Conference-Leading Saints
NEW ULM -The MLC women's soccer team was unable to slow down high-scoring St. Scholastica in a 10-0 loss Saturday.
The Saints took control from the start, scoring twice in the first 11 minutes, and then adding three more goals in the final ten minutes of the first half to take a 5-0 halftime lead.
Keely Keese faced 22 shots in goal for MLC, stopping ten of them. Lauren Maertz and Jenna Maurer combined for five shots for the Knights.
MLC (6-4, 4-2) returns to action on Thursday at Bethany Lutheran.
Josh Hansen Finishes Second at UMAC
LAKE CITY - First-year golfer Josh Hansen shot the low round of the day to finish second at the UMAC Men's Golf Championship at the Jewel Golf Club.
Hansen shot 73 on the day, tying for the second-lowest round of any golfer at the three day event. He finished the tournament with a final score of 226, just three strokes behind first-place Austin Snow of Bethany Lutheran.
Because of his finish, Hansen was also named All-UMAC for 2013.
In team competition, the Knights finished in sixth place. MLC finished today with the fourth-best total of any school, shaving 10 strokes off Friday's 334 total, but was unable to overcome an opening day 351 to move up in the standings.
Joel Sonntag shot 81 on the final day to finish 15th in the individual competition, while Craig Wilke's 82 was his best round of the event. Jacob Biebert also shot his best round of the tournament (88) to round out the line-up.
Martin Luther College sweeps St. Scholastica in volleyball
DULUTH - The Martin Luther College volleyball team swept St. Scholastica 3-0 Saturday by the scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-15.
The Knights came away with the first set after a back-and-forth between the two teams throughout, and then came from behind in the second, scoring the final seven points to overcome a 23-18 deficit and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. The Knights used the momentum gained from that second set win to roll through the third set to earn the sweep.
Rebecca Engelbrecht had a big day, finishing with 20 kills to lead all players in the match. Sara Willems also had a very strong performance with eight kills, and Engelbrecht and Willems combined to finish six of the seven points to end the second set.
Miranda Maasz had another strong, finishing with 38 assists, four kills and five digs. Kayla Schoeneck led the team with a match-high 16 digs, while Alex Anthon added 15 digs.
MLC improved to 10-8 on the season and 4-2 in league play.
