Flooding cancels annual Pull for Peace rope tug

June 26, 2014

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. (AP) — Floodwaters have forced the cancellation of this year's International Pull for Peace between the United States and Canada.

Residents of International Falls, Minnesota, and Fort Frances, Ontario, hold a tug of rope war over the Rainy River every year around Canada Day and Independence Day.

However, floodwaters have inundated the Canadian side of the river this year, forcing organizers to cancel the event.

Instead, the U.S. has invited Canadians over to Minnesota for an international peace party. WDIO-TV ( ) reports the event is next Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Pat Roche Landing on the Rainy River Waterfront. The party will include a free picnic, music and the singing of the U.S. and Canadian national anthems.

The tug of war also had to be canceled in 2012 due to severe weather.
