NEW ULM - The first phase of the postseason for the 2013 fall sports season was released Thursday.
Sleepy Eye St. Mary's captured the No. 1 overall seed in Section 2A for the second-straight year.
The Knights (8-0), who garnered the No. 2 ranking in the state in Class A, will by vying for their third-straight appearance in the state tournament. They will host No. 8-seed Mankato Loyola on Oct. 22.
Despite its loss to Springfield on Wednesday, New Ulm Cathedral (5-3) had already locked up the No. 2 seed in Section 2A. The Greyhounds will host No. 7-seed Sleepy Eye (0-8).
No. 3 Minnesota Valley Lutheran (4-4) will host Cedar Mountain/Comfrey (1-7), while No. 4 Springfield (4-4) will host No. 5 Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (5-3).
In Section 2AAAA, New Ulm (0-8) drew the lowest seed and will face No. 3 Marshall. The winner of that game will take on No. 2 Waseca.
In Section 3AA, New Ulm earned the No. 5 seed in the South bracket and will open play at No. 4-seeded Worthington on Oct. 25.
The Eagles (13-13-1) finished second overall in the South Central Conference with an 8-2 conference record.
Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop, which tied with Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart and Wabasso for the Tomahawk Conference title, earned a No. 4 seed in the North bracket in Section 3AA. The Thunderbirds (18-8) will host Redwood Valley on Oct. 25.
In Section 2A, BLHS earned the No. 1 seed in the North bracket. The Mustangs (14-8) will face the winner of the play-in match between No. 9 Nicollet and No. 8 Cleveland.
New Ulm Cathedral will open section play against rival Minnesota Valley Lutheran after beating it last Tuesday. The Greyhounds are the No. 4 seed, while the Chargers are the No. 5 seed. They will play at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24 in the Cathedral Gym.
No. 10 Sleepy Eye will play No. 7 Sleepy Eye St. Mary's in a play-in match, while No. 11 Cedar Mountain/Comfrey will play No. 6 Springfield in the other in Section 2A. All play-in matches will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday.
