ARLINGTON - Amanda Feterl, elementary art teacher at Sibley East Public Schools in Arlington was recognized as the Co-Elementary Art Teacher of the Year in Minnesota for 2013-2014 at the annual Art Educators of Minnesota fall conference.
Feterl first taught art at Chaska High School from 2002-2006, after which she accepted the newly created elementary art position at Sibley East and has taught there ever since. Feterl was named the 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year for the Sibley East school district and this past May was honored as a top ten finalist for the Minnesota Teacher of the Year.
Feterl's professional contributions have raise awareness for the arts and provide her rural students with engaging, art centered opportunities. Some of her endeavors include the annual weeklong summer art camp that she hosts for local children and organization of the Square 1 Art fundraiser that supplements her school budget. She has written grants allowing artists-in-residence to work with her students. She initiated a monthly Family Art Club and orchestrated a popular 6th grade art lock-in known as the Art-a-thon. She created the website www.theartinvasion.com, which is a resource for other art teachers.
Feterl is now eligible to receive a Regional Elementary Art Educators award at the National Art Educators Association annual conference to be held on March 29-31, 2014 in San Diego.
