Jayhawks sweep at triangular

SLEEPY EYE - River Valley lost both season-opening dual meets at its home triangular on Thursday night.

Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther was the king of the event, beating Redwood Valley/Cedar Mountain 47-32 before beating River Valley 57-22 in the next dual. Redwood Valley defeated River Valley 51-25 to close the night at the Sleepy Eye Public gym.

"We're pretty young and inexperienced, so I think we're doing all right," said M/T/ML coach Darren Gifferson. "We're winning some matches with our young guys."

The Jayhawks (2-2, 1-0 Valley Conference) secured bonus points in all eight of their victories against Redwood Valley - seven of which were falls - before earning a combined 36 team points in the second dual as the result of River Valley's six forfeited matches.

Among the more experienced wrestlers on his squad, Gifferson said junior 195-pounder Jake Denn is the best. Denn, who pinned Redwood Valley's Cody Anderson before winning by forfeit against River Valley, said his biggest driving factor is keeping the intensity high in his matches.

However, Denn still has one key aspect he said he needs to work on.

"I'm working on my riding because it's not the best," Denn said. "It will be good to get down one single ride."

River Valley (0-2, 0-1 Valley) was unable to fill a full 14-slot varsity roster because it did not get enough students to go out for wrestling between Springfield, Sleepy Eye and Sleepy Eye St. Mary's. Instead, River Valley coach Todd Bertram has taken a different approach.

"When we have to forfeit so many weights, it's kind of tough to look at a dual meet season," Bertram said. "What we try to do is focus on the individuals that wrestle and keep a score on wins and losses for those guys."

Sam Baier (145 pounds) and Tim Krueger (182) both went 2-0 for the Wildcats, who saw solid performances out of Conner Bartrum, Tyson Meidl and Tyler Baird as well.

The match of the night took place in River Valley's dual against Redwood Valley at 138 pounds, where junior Gerritt Meidl overcame a deficit in the third period against Jordan Mann to win by fall in 5:02.

Meidl, who trailed 2-0 after one period and 4-1 after two, secured Mann in a cradle from the neutral position to inch to 4-3 at the beginning of the third. Mann escaped, but was put on his back by Meidl just after the clock eclipsed the 1-minute remaining mark.

"He's a really tough wrestler from top, from his feet he's gotten a lot better," Bertram said of Meidl. "He's working on the bottom position, so we like to put him there to get better, but he feels much more comfortable on top and on his feet and I think we felt pretty good the last period knowing he was going to be in that position.

"He just kept wrestling hard. Gerritt took advantage of some good positioning on his part, bad positioning on the other kid's part."

In his first match, Meidl had hung tough against Justin Gifferson, who pinned Mann in 0:55. Meidl fell to Gifferson in a 6-3 decision.

M/T/ML will be at Blue Earth Area at 10 a.m. on Saturday, while Redwood Valley will be at River Valley's Invitational, which is slated to begin at 9 a.m. in Springfield.
