NEW ULM - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team stayed unbeaten at home this season with an 82-75 win over Wartburg Friday night.
The Knights fell behind 21-12 with 11:14 to play in the first half, but roared back thanks to a 23-0 run over the next seven minutes on the way to a 43-28 halftime edge.
Mariah Schoof gave the Knights a big spark off the bench, scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting, and making both of her attempts from beyond the 3-point line.
First-year forwards Schoof and Faith Schroeder each made big contributions off the bench, setting career highs with 16 and 12 points, respectively.
Brittney Gossen led the Knights with 21 points. Hannah Hackbarth gave the Knights four players in double figures with 11 points, while Rebecca Engelbrecht finished with a team-best 12 rebounds.
MLC improved to 2-4 on the season and will return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Central.
MLC men fall to Wartburg
NEW ULM - The Martin Luther College men's basketball team was unable to slow down the Knights of Wartburg College in a 78-60 loss Friday night.
Wartburg's size up front gave the Knights trouble to start the game, but Galen Holzhueter was able to keep MLC in the game with 20 first half points as Wartburg took a 41-31 halftime lead.
Wartburg was able to slow Holzhueter and the rest of the MLC offense in the second half, holding the Knights to 34.5 percent shooting after the break while Wartburg shot 62.5 percent from the floor on the way to the double digit win.
Holzhueter finished with a game-high 27 points to go with nine rebounds, while Luke Rothe and Todd Brassow each scored 10 points for the Knights.
MLC fell to 0-5 on the season with the loss, while Wartburg improved to 3-4 with the win.
The Knights will return to action at 4 p.m. Saturday when they host Central.
