SPRINGFIELD - River Valley wrestling coach Todd Bertram was pleased with the way his team competed despite being shorthanded, which it has been all season.
Four of the five Wildcats who took the mat won - three by fall - in their 42-27 dual meet loss to Fulda/Murray County Central, which was the second of two duals on Thursday night at Springfield High School.
The Wildcats (0-7, 0-1 Valley) gave up 36 points in forfeiting six matches, while Fulda/MCC (2-6, 0-2 Red Rock) forfeited the 106-pound match. The teams agreed to a double forfeit at 152 pounds and heavyweight, meaning no points were awarded for those matches.
River Valley's two ranked wrestlers - No. 8 Sam Baier (138 pounds) and No. 8 Tim Krueger (182) - both won by fall in their matches.
"Sam's only lost once and Tim's lost twice - both lost to state-caliber kids," Bertram said. "Those were good matches for the quality kids that we put out there."
Baier, a sophomore, tallied two takedowns in which he let Will Gehl automatically escape before netting the fall on his third takedown 0:40 into the 138-pound match.
Krueger took a little more time pinning Dalton Keeler at 182 pounds, failing to get his shoulder blades pierced to the mat before the first-period buzzer after a catch-and-release campaign that stood three stanzas.
After notching a quick reversal from the down position, Krueger pinned Keeler with an official time of 2:32.
"I wanted to work my stuff: Take him down, let him go, get a good workout in and then second period just go at him," Krueger said.
Junior Nathaniel Rosado was the third wrestler to get a pin, nailing Breylan Jacobson in 0:50 in the 220-pound match. Unlike his ranked teammates, Rosado did not begin the wrestling season on the varsity roster.
"He wrestled when he was younger, but hasn't wrestled the last three or four years," Bertram said of Rosado. "He's picking things up quickly and it's kind of nice to see him come out here and have success at home."
Bertram said Rosado is 7-1 in his junior varsity matches, which have helped him prepare for varsity.
Sophomore Conner Bertram picked up the other win for River Valley having defeated Jon Gehl 11-6 in a sudden victory decision at 120 pounds.
Tied 6-6, Bertram notched a takedown with 0:22 to go in the sudden victory period. He was awarded three back points after completing his hold shortly afterward to win 11-6.
BOBCATS RIDE BONUS POINTS TO VICTORY: In the first dual meet of the night, No. 6 Wabasso/Red Rock Central steamrolled Fulda/MCC 60-11 to pick up its first Red Rock Conference victory of the season.
Of its 11 victories on the night, the Bobcats (7-1, 1-0 Red Rock) picked up bonus points in all but one of them. Four of said victories were awarded by Fulda/MCC forfeits.
Derek Christians (132 pounds), Brakken Bierl (138), Josh Mattison (170) and Cody Coulter (220) all won by fall, while No. 2 Spencer Jenniges (120) won by technical fall for the Bobcats.
Freshman Jared Welch was on the cusp of notching a technical fall against Dylan Nelsen in the 195-pound match, but instead rode him out for the last minute of the match to win 19-7.
"He wrestles above his age 90 percent of the time," said W/RRC coach Brett Bartholomaus of Welch. "When he learns a real solid takedown and when learns to lock people down and don't roll around quite so much with them, he's going to be really, really tough."
Welch had trouble maintaining positioning on the top while trying to turn Nelsen, falling into a reversal three separate times during the match.
Bartholomaus said his team missed opportunities to pick up wins with Mitchell Fulton at 126 pounds and Caleb Kemp at 145.
Fulton climbed to with two at 6-4 in the third period, but No. 10 Ben Blanchette nailed a reversal to win 8-4. Kemp gave up a 3-2 lead in the third period to an escape and a takedown with 0:08 to go against Nathan Beech to lose 5-3.
"We knew those matches, we looked forward to those matchups because they're familiar opponents," Bartholomaus said. "We looked to change the stride a little bit and get some revenge, but it didn't happen."
