The high cost of state dinners

February 14, 2014
The Journal

To the editor:

This morning I heard something that maybe grates on Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike. Each presidential State Dinner costs between $250,000 and $500,000. And guess who gets to attend: movie stars, politicos, and the rich. So who picks up the tab - YOU - the American taxpayer! If our national debt matters, then why does Washington spend such amounts on something for folks who can well afford to pay the full cost of the dinner? I think there should be a state dinner for common folk that is OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, AND FOR THE PEOPLE. Isn't that a novel notion?
