Bastian, Forst lead New Ulm FFA

NEW ULM - Seniors Allison Bastian and Bridget Forst were among the busiest New Ulm FFA members honored Monday at the 78th Annual Parent/Member Banquet and Awards Program in the New Ulm High School gym.

Bastian, the outgoing chapter president, received the Chapter Leadership Award, won Swine Production Entrepreneurship, General Livestock Showmanship and a 12th Grade Scholarship. She was the Grand Champion Crop Showperson and Soybean Champion Showperson and also the top fruit salesperson. She also was a state speaking contestant.

Forst, the outgoing chapter treasurer, was fruit sales runner-up, won a 12th Grade Scholarship and was fifth among Top Crop Showpersons. She recently won the regional public speaking title and was a state and national choir member.

Senior Megan Struss was Chapter Star Farmer, Chapter Sentinel, won Ag Communications and Ag Education awards, Dairy Production Entrepreneurship and Dairy Showmanship along with her brother Matt and won the Ag Sales award with Forst and Kali Blees.

"We truly have some outstanding youth to work with," said NUHS FFA Advisor Jeff Nelson. "Our chapter officers went through extensive interviews to become officers. They're premier citizens and leaders. We are very strong. We have things to look forward to in New Ulm and Minnesota from these people. It was truly a pleasure to work with them."

Other Chapter Award winners were Austin Brandes Chapter Star Placement, Star Greenhand Kayla Brandes, Outstanding Sophomore Mariah Vogel, Outstanding Junior Matt Struss, Outstanding Committee Chairperson Forst and Kiersten Koehler, Outstanding Service Austin Brandes and Chris Huber, Mike Kienlen Memorial Mechanics Award Brandon Hale, Best Set of Records Matt and Megan Struss and Smiley Attitude Award Ashley Kohn.

Honorary Chapter Degrees went to Alan Forst, Carrie Forst, Doug Koehler, Linda Koehler, Mark Kohn, Michele Kohn, Ronda Johnson, Paul Struss and Mary Struss.

Region 7 Sentinel Michael Burns of Watertown-Mayer and Parliamentarian Cody Guenther of Lafayette and GFW (Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop) presented a slide show encouraging members to be active in as many FFA activities and camps as possible.
