River Region Cooperative was inducted into the Minnesota Grain and Feed Association (MGFA) Century Club at ceremonies held at its recent 107th annual convention in St. Cloud.
The MGFA, which represents the grain elevator and feed mill industry in Minnesota, established the Century Club several years ago, as a means to recognize grain elevators and feed mills that have been in continuous operation for more than 100 years. The cooperative joins 23 other grain and feed firms as a member of this elite group of rural agribusinesses that have withstood the test of time and continue to provide critical community leadership, economic vitality, market access and customer service to the area they serve.
River Region Cooperative, originally known as the Sleepy Eye Farmers Warehouse Association, was founded on Dec. 2, 1890, by a group of 133 local farmers who were disappointed with private grain merchants. They built their first grain elevator in 1898, which was a 16,000-bushel elevator.
The River Region Cooperative of Sleepy Eye, which was organized in 1890, was inducted into the Minnesota Grain and Feed Association Century Club, in ceremonies held at its recent 107th annual convention. This firm was one of four country grain elevators inducted this year into the MGFA Century Club, in recognition for a century of continuous dedicated service to the agricultural community. Eleven years later they renamed the business the Farmer Elevator Company of Sleepy Eye. Through mergers with Brown County Co-op Oil in 1983, acquisitions of the local Cargill facility in 1984 and Cobden Grain & Feed in 1994, the business continued to expand. They merged with Community Co-op Oil of Essig in 2003 and renamed the business River Region Cooperative.
Today, River Region Cooperative handles grain, feed, agronomy, petroleum, LP and lawn and garden products. Their annual sales are approximately $100 million. River Region Cooperative is led by General Manager Kevin Subart.
