NEW ULM - The New Ulm Cathedral girl's golf team enjoyed a little home-course advantage on Monday.
The Greyhounds came away the winners of the first leg of the Tomahawk Conference girl's golf meet at the New Ulm Country Club with a team score of 421. Sleepy Eye (446), Springfield (447), Cedar Mountain (464), Wabasso (498), Sleepy Eye St. Mary's (499), Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (507), Minnesota Valley Lutheran (593) and Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart (Incomplete) also competed at the event.
To say that Cathedral coach Kayla Berg expected this type of score would be a bit misleading. But she'll take Monday's results.
"I think that this is a building year, but I was very pleased by my girls and with what they did and how they played and how they stayed focused for the meet," Berg said. "There is depth and these girls have to realize that we are competitors."
Cedar Mountain's Courtney Nelson is the leader of the three-day event, which continues next Wednesday at Oakdale Golf Club near Buffalo Lake. Nelson shot a 90, four strokes better than Karrah Remus of Sleepy Eye (94).
Sleepy Eye's Lauren Laffen shot a 100. The Cathedral trio of Ellie Dittrich (101), Brooke Dummer (102) and Megan Laraway (105) followed.
While Nelson was the leader after the first day, Remus wasn't too far behind considering she didn't have a great day by her standards.
"Not how I wanted it to," Remus said. "I had a couple of holes where I could've did a lot better on."
The Indians should be among the top teams in both the Tomahawk Conference and Section 2A. But that's something to worry about later for Remus and company.
"Right now I'm just trying to get started," Remus said. "I think we have a lot of potential once we start getting out there more."
On the boy's side, Sleepy Eye took first in the team event with a score of 381. Springfield (392), CM (396), BLHS (401), St. Mary's (402), MVL (436), Wabasso (438), GFW (455) and Cathedral (464) followed.
MVL's Jacob Grunewald led the way with an 85. Sleepy Eye's Ben Laffen (87), BLHS's Jack Broderius (89) and Springfield's Andrew Salonek (93) finished in the top five.
