MANKATO, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team lost a pair of games at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Crossover hosted by Bethany Lutheran on Tuesday, losing 8-5 to Crown and then 7-1 to UM-Morris.
Crown jumped on top with seven runs in the first two innings on the way to defeating the Knights 8-5 in the first game.
The Knights opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a Storm error, but Crown scored three times in the bottom half of the first and four more times in the second to build a 7-2 lead after two innings.
MLC answered those early runs with three in the third innings thanks to RBI hits from Sara Willems, Gina Radue and Morgan Kumbier, but was unable to push any more runs across the rest of the way as the Storm held on for the win.
Kelli Doell started the game for MLC and fell to 5-6 on the season after allowing seven runs (four earned) in 1 2/3 innings of work.
UM-Morris broke open a one-run game with five runs in the final two innings to beat MLC 7-1.
After the Cougars opened the game with a run in the top of the first, Emily Waldek put the Knights on the board with a home run to lead off the bottom of the first, tying the score at 1-1.
The Cougars took the lead with one run in the third, and then broke the game open with three in the sixth and two more in the seventh off MLC starting pitcher Kathryn Marquardt.
Marquardt went the distance for MLC, allowing seven runs (all earned) on 14 hits while striking out five as she fell to 7-7 on the season.
MLC's record fell to 13-14 overall and 7-10 in UMAC play with the two losses.
The Knights will return to action at 3 p.m. Friday when they travel to St. Scholastica for a doubleheader.
