NEW ULM - The New Ulm Black 16U softball team went 3-0 in pool play portion of the Windmill Classic on Saturday to advance to Sunday's bracket play round.
Black won its first game 5-0 against Diamond Thunder (Lennox, S.D.). Leah Krzmarzick was the winning pitcher.
In Game 2, Black got out to a 2-0 lead against St. Peter Thunder thanks to a two-run home run from Nikki Dittrich over the center field fence.
St. Peter answered with a run of its own in the bottom of inning capitalizing on Black's only error of the game.
But starting pitcher Hunter Ahlness was lights out the rest of the way, giving up six hits and no earned runs while striking out eight and only giving one batter a free pass.
"Hunter threw really well," said Black coach Lon Ahlness.
New Ulm added to its lead in the third with RBI singles from Dittrich and Sidney Forstner, and also in the sixth with five more runs to make it 9-1.
Forstner finished with three hits. Morgan Wilfahrt, Emma Berg and Ahlness each had an RBI.
Black defeated Janesville in its third game 15-0. The game was cut short because of the 15-run rule after three.
Krzmarzick was the winning pitcher, pitching all three innings and giving up only two hits, striking out four and walking one.
Black pushed 12 runs across the plate in the first inning to take a commanding lead. It put three more across in the bottom of the second to get to 15-0.
Kelsey Anderson, Wilfahrt, Ahlness and Dittrich each had two hits. Krzmarzick and Forstner had one hit apiece.
"We had good pitching, good defense and timely hitting," Ahlness said.
Black earned the No. 1 seed and will play either Janesville or Rockford at 11 a.m. on Sunday at St. Paul's Field 2.
