To the editor:
I do not write letters to the editor because I never want to put myself out there, but this time I feel I must. I am in support of the District 88 referendum. I believe that we need to support our wonderful city and that means supporting our public school system.
Don't get me wrong, I do not like paying the high property tax for living within the city of New Ulm, but my taxes are what they are because I choose to live where I do. That is the choice of every property owner.
I have been reading and listening to the pros and cons of the District 88 proposal and I hope everyone thinks about what it means to be a community, where we support one another. This happens in so many ways privately in our community, as well as publicly throughout our government system. Our support for each other can come in many forms, such as federal taxes that support farm payments and subsidies, which have strengthened our regional agriculture industry, or social security taxes, that all young people pay, that support the needs of our seniors. These young people will probably never see a payment from the social security tax they are paying. The point is, we need to support one another if we are going to have a thriving community.
I work at the New Ulm Medical Center in the Radiology Department and I know how much it costs to replace a piece of equipment to try to bring the very best technology to the wonderful patients that we are lucky enough to care for. We do this because we care about our community and want the very best for them. When recruiting physicians or healthcare professionals, they are always interested about the strength of our school system. I am sure that every business within the city of New Ulm wanting to grow has similar interests. The same goes for the school district, we need to keep up with technology and facilities for our students, our children, to be competitive in our ever changing world.
Without a strong school system we will have fewer families in New Ulm and the property tax burden will only increase. Everything we need or enjoy today costs us more than years ago and that includes school improvements. I believe that if we financially support a great school district, the whole community will reap the benefits in the long run. I do not have any children or grandchildren in the district anymore but I believe in New Ulm.
