NEW ULM The Airport Water Tower reconditioning project is underway.
MK Painting Inc. was awarded the project in April by the Public Utilities Commission. The tower was constructed in 1988, and its original coating is deteriorating.
City Manager Brian Gramentz said the reconditioning project will protect the tower for the next 20 years.
Workers use a specially designed basket for their ride to the top of water tower.
The water tower is outfitted with the necessary rigging to allow work crews
to begin the process of repainting the 26-year-old tower
In addition to a new coat of paint, the project includes upgrades to the condensate system, access doors and a safety system to the internal ladder.
The new system will be capable of accommodating cellular antenna equipment. A lease agreement with Verizon Wireless allows placement of 12 antennas on the tower after it is painted. The annual rental income from the antennas will be approximately $34,000.
The tower will be a light shade of blue called "Blue Illusion." Water/District Energy Supervisor George Brown said the color is more white than blue and will match the color of the new Nehls Park Water Tower.
The project began Friday, Aug.8. It is expected to be completed within a 65-day time frame. MK Painting will be working seven days a week to finish by mid October.
