Community support for schools humbling

Eagle Update

August 16, 2014
By Jeff Bertrang - ISD 88 Superintendent , The Journal

I am humbled by the community support of the school district building referendum. While not everyone supported the referendum, we know that this project is necessary to provide space for academics, athletics, physical education and performing arts. Our job continues to focus on educating people on the needs of our students, programs and the community.

This work didn't come easy. A school belongs to the community. There were many parents, community members and business owners who worked tirelessly to promote and support the referendum. The school board is indebted to the work of these people and for their support of our educational programs.

Over the next several weeks we will work with our construction planning team to draft up a calendar, task list and committee work. We will ask community members, parents, staff and students to participate on committees to help design facilities that will meet our needs and be something we can all be proud of. There are many important tasks to complete with a building project of this magnitude.

Planning facilities is not the most important task that we do. School starts in a few short weeks. Providing our students with a safe and nurturing educational environment is our first priority. We are here for students first. We have dedicated, passionate and driven staff who are ready to provide the best educational experience for your student.

We are excited to add another kindergarten section to help with increased enrollments. For the upcoming school year, we have added sections in kindergarten, second and third grade. We have increased high school options, offering more college courses and a new Mechatronics program that provides students opportunities to learn about engineering and mechanics. These options are about providing programs to meet our student and community needs.

The school board established a strategic plan for the district that covers the next two school years. This is our roadmap of which we follow and provide resources to match our priorities. Below are the vision, mission and goals:

- Vision: Preparing all of our students to be successful in a 21st Century World.

- Mission: To create a regional center of academic and social excellence for all children.

- Goals: a) Update our facilities to meet current and future program needs

b) Develop innovative academic programs

c) Provide a systematic intervention program

The purpose for a strategic plan is to focus our time and resources on what we feel is most important to our students and community.

Again, I thank you for your support of New Ulm Public Schools.

Go Eagles!
