YOUNG LADIES RETURNS FROM EASTERN TRIP
Were In Chicago The Day Loeb and Leopold Were Sentenced.
——–
The misses Gretchen Winkalman and Ellen Oche returned to their homes in this Thursday evening from a four weeks’ trip thru the Tast. Leaving New Ulm August 16, the young ladies want to Minneapolis, stopping one day, and from there proceeded to Chicago, After a short visit in the Windy City, they took the boat up the Great Lakes, to Buffalo. Along this trip many places of interest were visited, including Mackinac Island and Perry Sound, which are in Canada. Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo proved to be interesting places. From Buffalo they went on to Niagara Falls and to Lewiston, N. Y, where they took a boat to Toronto, Canada, up the St. Lawrence river. Arriving at Prescott, they took a boat which is especially constructed to shoot the rapids in the St. Lawrence river. Here the wonderful sight of the Thousand Islands interested the young ladies. Miss Winkelmann says that this is one of the most beautiful sights they saw. Pretentious castles are built on many of the islands and are constructed in the most beautiful spots. Shooting the rapids was an interesting and exciting experience and one long to be remembered. The boat took them to Montreal and Quebec, Canada, where they visited St. Anne’s Shrine. Going on to Portland, Maine, they visited Longfellow’s Home, and other points of interest. After sight seeing in Boston, they crossed the river to Charleston, where they saw “Old Iron Sides”the famous battleship which is in dry dock. At New York City, they were guests of Miss Josephine Fredericks a former New Ulm resident, and Miss Fredericks took them about the city, showing them the historical spots which included “the Statue of Liberty”
From New York they journeyed to Philadelphia and saw the old Liberty Bell. At Atlantic City, one of the interesting views was of the famous board walk, which is eight miles long. All the big parades arranged in the city are staged on this walk. The day after they were in that city, the great beauty contest of the East was put on, and the girls had seen“Miss Portland” at Portland, Maine, who was to represent that city in the contest. Returning to Philadelphia, they went to Washington, D.C., where they spent several days visiting the capitol buildings and were fortunate enough to visit the White House on one of the visiting days and were admitted. Mt. Vernon and the Shenodoah Valley attracted unusual interest and attention. Next, Charleston, W. Virginia was visited. This city is quaint and queer. Merchants display their goods by hanging them outside their places of business and this did not exactly appeal to the New Ulm girls. While in Cincinnati, they called on Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Weber, the former being a nephew of the Steinhauser family. From there ,they went to Chicago and were in the city the day the verdict of Loeb and Leopold was announced. They saw the huge crowds gathered around the courthouse and saw the armed guards, and heard everybody talking about the case. They saw the house where Bobbie Franks had lived, and they will probably not soon forget the visit in Chi-cago. After a visit of one day with relatives and friends in Minneapolis they returned to this city and are glad to get home again, although the trip offseason never to be forgotten.
