Heeding the widespread demand for and commercial instruction, to give residents of New Ulm who are beyond regular school age, an opportunity to acquire knowledge along these lines, adjourned monthly meeting, Wednesday evening, inaugurated this innovation by a unanimous vote.
Begin Next Tuesday.
The night school will begin next Tuesday evening at 7:30 o’clock, and sessions will be held regularly there after on Tuesday and Friday evenings of each week. The entire semester will comprise eight weeks, and instruction will be given by the regular high school home economies and commercial department teachers. For their services, they will receive $2.50 each evening, to be paid out of school district funds. To cover the actual cost of materials used, a fee of 25 cents per week will be charged each student in the home economics departments in the commercial classes will be furnished them at cost. The commercial classes will be in charge of the Misses Agnes Benson and Thea Reager and Helen Ludwig will instruct the home economics students.
Nearly 40 Enrolled.
Superintendent Gloor reported that 39 students had already reported for night school attendance. Of these, 25 will attend the commercial classes while 14 will enter the home economics department. In the former, instruction will be given in shorthand, typewriting and bookkeeping, while the home economics students will be taught cooking and sewing. Registration for both departments is still open and prospective students, who have not as yet reported, should communicate with Superintendent Gloor at once. All applicants are urged to be present at the opening session, nextTuesday evening.
Visual Education.
It will be remembered that the school board, at a previous meeting, discussed the advisability of instituting visual education in the grades of the local public schools. Superintendent Arnold Gloor was at that time requested to communicate with various school authorities in Minnesota, where this method of correlated instruction is in use, and he received a favorable reply in each instance. The board finally voted to purchase the necessary equipment, which includes views, a cabinet in which the latter will be kept, and other accessories. The cost of this equipment is $187. Visual education is used primarily in connection with the teaching of geography.
Vaccination Urged.
Miss Cora Bruess, school nurse, was instructed to urge all pupils of the public schools to become vaccinated against small-pox. While this pre-caution was not made compulsory, parents are requested to heed the warning sounded by Dr. O. J. Selfert, local health officer, and safe-guard their children against the dread disease.
Purchase Wrestling Mnt.
There is considerable good amateur wrestling material among the boys of the local high school, and as a means building indoor sport, the board decided to purchase a wrestling mat,12×12 feet in size, for use in the high school gymnasium. The salary of Miss Ida Koch, normal training instructor, was increased from $1,700 to $1,750, in accordance with the established schedule. The local school district reimbursed in full by the state for Miss Koch’s salary.
