New Ulm was the mecca of the Turners of the state on Saturday and Sunday, when the annual convention of Bezirk and a combined Turntag of the ladies’ and active classes of the societies of the Bezirk was held. This was followed by a banquet and the evening program wound up with a dance.
Fred Pfaender of the New Ulm Turnverein acted as chairman of the convention, George Hogen as permanent secretary,William Kuehn of the St. Anthony Turnverein, Minneapolis, as vice chairman and William Mueller of the Turnverein St. Paul as assistant secretary
Gain In Gym Classes
From the reports of the district officers it appears that the Bezirk is in a healthy condition and the physical training work is gaining rapidly in all three societies. The St. Paul Turnverien has an enrollment of over 600 in its gym classes. Many applicants had to be turned away, because of lack of accommodations and this circumstance has led to a serious discussion of the advisability of building a new hall in St. Paul
New Ulm Again Honored
Most of the work of the convention was routine work and was promptly dis-patched. New Ulm was again honored with the executive committee for the coming year and the Turnverein S. Anthony was designated as the place for holding the next annual convention.
Turnfest Dates Fixed
There was some discussion as to the dates for the Turnfest which is to be held in New Ulm this year. Some of the delegates favored an earlier date for holding the district meet, but after the matter had been thoroughly explained and the reasons given why the New Ulm Turnverein had decided on July 4th and 5th for the dates of the tournament, a resolution was adopted favorable to the action taken by the local society.
Raise Of Per Capita Tax
The per capita tax which had been 60 cents for some years was raised to 75 cents and this is to be collected in two semi-annual installments. Owing to a raise in the national dues, it became necessary to raise the total per capita tax,8o as to provide sufficient funds for the transaction of the business of the Bezirk.
National Delegates
The following were elected as delegates to the national convention which meets at Elkhart Lake, Wis., the Turner sum-mer camp, June 26. 27 and 28: Albert Steinhauser and Herman Hein from the Turnverein New Ulm, William Mueller of St. Paul and Otto G. Medler of Minneapolis. As alternates Albert Schintz, St. Paul, William R. Kuehn, Minneapolis and Charles Hauenstein of New Ulm were elected.
Splendid Turntag
The Turntag Sunday afternoon was good from the standpoint of attendance and also from the standpoint of work accomplished. There were marching exercises, dancing steps, free exercises and apparatus work and the participants acquitted themselves in a splendid manner. At the close there was a sharply contested volley ball game between the actives of the St. Anthony Turnverein and the actives of the New Ulm,Turnverein, the latter finally winning out by one point.
Banquet And Program
The banquet was served in the theatre hall at which 200 participated. The eats were exceptionally good, the service was very prompt and the program was short and snappy. Herman Hein acted as toastmaster. There were short addresses by Albert Steinhauser, district president, Albert Pfaender of the local society and by William Mueller of St. Paul and William R. Kuehn of Minneapolis. Splendid recitations were given by Mrs. L. G. Bell and Mrs. Emmy Steinhauser and Richard Sallet gave a fine violin solo, Mrs. Herman Hein furnishing the accompaniment. The most surprised mortal at the banquet was George Hogen who was asked to step forward by toastmaster Hein and was presented with a fine bouquet of flowers as a mark of appreciation for the splendid services he had rendered as permanent secretary of the convention. The hall was then cleared for dancing and the young folks enjoyed themselves until long after midnight. Every one voted the Turntag, banquet and dance a wonderful success.

The delegates to the Tagsatzung from New Ulm were: Nick Gulden, Otto Heymann, Franz Niemann, Fred Pfaender, Herman Hein, Armin Heymann, Charles Hauenstein and Ernst Wicherski. Friday night there will be a meeting of District No. 599, G. B. U. at the Creamery Hall in this city. One of the important things that will come up is the election of a new treasurer in place of John Silbermann, deceased.
On Friday evening, March 20, at eight o’clock the Zither Club of the Davenport Turngemeinde, will broad cast a concert from radio station WOC Davenport, Iowa. This club is under the direction of A. K. Fahrner.
