Putin says Russia has tested a new intermediate range missile

(AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin says Moscow has tested a new intermediate-range missile in a strike on Ukraine and that it could use the weapon against countries that have allowed Kyiv to use their missiles to strike Russia. Putin said during a nationwide TV address that the Russian strike Thursday on the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro came in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory this week that used U.S. and British longer-range missiles. Two people were wounded in the attack. Putin declared that Russia would issue advance warnings if it launches more strikes with such missile against Ukraine to allow civilians to evacuate to safety. He warned that U.S. air defense systems wouldn’t be capable of intercepting Russian missiles.

At least 38 killed as gunmen open fire on vehicles carrying Shiites

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani police say gunmen have opened fire on vehicles carrying Shiite Muslims in the country’s restive northwest, killing at least 38 people and wounding 20 others. Thursday’s attack happened in Kurram, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province where clashes between majority Sunni Muslims and minority Shiites have killed dozens in recent months. A police official said the vehicles were traveling in a convoy from Parachinar to Peshawar when gunmen opened fire. No one immediately claimed responsibility. Shiite Muslims make up about 15% of the 240 million population of Sunni-majority Pakistan.

Brazilian police indict former President Bolsonaro and aides

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s federal police have indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 other people on charges of attempting a coup to keep him in office after his electoral defeat in the 2022 elections. The findings are to be delivered Thursday to Brazil’s Supreme Court, which must decide whether to refer them to Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet, who will either formally charge Bolsonaro and put the former president on trial or toss the investigation. The former right-wing president has denied all claims he tried to stay in office after his narrow electoral defeat in 2022 to his rival, leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro has faced a series of legal threats since then.

War-crimes court issues arrest warrants for Netanyahu, ex-defense minister

THE HAGUE (AP) — The world’s top war-crimes court has issued arrest warrants for the leaders of Israel and Hamas, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The warrants issued Thursday accuse them of crimes against humanity in connection with their war that began more than a year ago. The warrants against Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant focus on allegations Israel has used food as a weapon in its campaign against Hamas in Gaza, a charge Israeli officials deny. The action by the International Criminal Court came as the death toll from Israel’s campaign in Gaza passed 44,000 people. Local health authorities say more than half of those killed were women and children.
