NU man faces five felony charges
NEW ULM — A 49-year-old New Ulm man faces five felony charges and three gross misdemeanor charges stemming from a March 13 alleged domestic assault in New Ulm.
Charges including felony harassment-second or subsequent violations, threats of violence, three counts of domestic assault, and gross misdemeanor introducing contraband into jail, fifth-degree drug possession and interrupting an emergency call were filed against Hans C. Gunderson, 626 1/2 S. Minnesota St. March 15.
A bail hearing was set for 11:30 a.m. March 16.
According to court documents, New Ulm Police met a woman and her friend at the Brown County Law Enforcement Center at 4:14 p.m. March 14. The alleged victim said she lived with Gunderson since August 2020 and noticed that $40 was missing from her bank account and questioned Gunderson about it and he became agitated.
The woman said Gunderson jumped on top of her and hit her on the right side of her head, causing her to see stars, then ground his knuckles on her head, held a pillow over her face for about 30 seconds, told her to stop screaming or he would “kill her” and punched her on the left knee cap.
The woman said she was scared and that Gunderson threatened to come back and get revenge, hit an item out of her hand when the woman’s friend arrived and knocked on the door.
The woman’s friend said she could hear the woman yelling to call police, which she yelled she would do if she wasn’t allowed in the residence.
The woman said Gunderson then left the residence through a second story window and took the woman’s cell phone.
Police photographed bruising the woman had on her left kneecap, right hand index knuckle and cuts on her right forearm.
Police tried to contact Gunderson at 626 1/2 S. Minnesota St. and found a cell phone in the yard. Police later entered the residence and and found Gunderson in the kitchen smoking a cigarette and arrested him.
Since there was no male correctional staff on duty, police searched Gunderson and found a metal case and a baggy with a trace of crystal residue that presumptively tested positive for methylone, a Schedule 1 controlled substance.
Gunderson’s criminal history showed he was convicted of domestic assault in Blue Earth County on May 18, 2016 and domestic assault in Watonwan County on Oct. 29, 2013.
