The Heart of New Ulm’s Safe Routes to School group has partnered with Jefferson Elementary to host a story stroll this week. The pages of two books are displayed on the walking route around Jefferson Elementary School.

Teachers will be able to take students on a walk during school hours and read a children’s book together.

1AThis story stroll will be left up for the duration of the week for children and families to enjoy outside of school hours.

There are two books on the route: “Snow Day” by Ezra Jack and “Wendy’s Winter Walk” by Cass Kim. Each book takes a different path around the school, but the starting point is near the entrance of Jefferson Elementary School.

Those walking clockwise around the school toward Garden Street will read “Snow Day” and those going counterclockwise will reach “Wendy’s Winter Walk.”

The program celebrates Winter Walk to School Day, a Minnesota Safe Routes to School initiative to promote getting outside for a walk in the winter time. It also celebrates I Love to Read Month that Jefferson participates in.

“It can be easy to hibernate in the winter time, so it’s important to look for ways to get outside and enjoy our Minnesota winters,” said Sam Gatton, coordinator of Safe Routes to School. “The idea for the story stroll is to do just that — create a fun opportunity to get outside for a walk.”
