Old Man Winter closes schools again
NEW ULM — A winter storm closed local and area schools Tuesday as snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches were forecast by the National Weather Service (NWS) for parts of central, south central, southwest and west central Minnesota.
Snowplow and tow truck drivers were busy locally and in the area late Tuesday morning as snow fell hard at times.
A Nixle message from Brown County read that no travel was advised in Brown County at 11:49 a.m. Tuesday until weather and road conditions improved. Nixle LLC is a geographic-based public notification system that quickly provides emergency information via telephone, SMS text message and email.
Tuesday closures included Hermann Express in New Ulm at 1 p.m., the Brown County Landfill at 1 p.m. and Heartland Express at 3 p.m.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation lifted all no travel advisories in Brown, Watonwan, Martin, Cottonwood, Rock, Jackson and Nobles counties at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Motorists were urged to use extreme caution as most roads were still partially or completely snow and ice covered. The highway department anticipates that travel may remain difficult over the next few days due to additional snowfall, blowing and drifting snow, and snow and ice compaction.
Motorists are reminded to be patient while snowplow operators work to improve driving conditions.
A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Ten to 14 inches of snow was forecast through midday Thursday for western Brown County, most of Redwood and Lyon County.
Temperatures will be slightly below normal Thursday into the weekend.
