St. Paul’s and New Ulm Middle School teams advance to Math Counts State competition
MANKATO — The St. Paul’s official team of Nathaniel Carlovsky, Ziva Zahrt, Jonah Hermanson, and Eli Schauland, as well as the other team members, scored well at the Chapter Math Counts Competition at Minnesota State University on Friday, Feb. 3.
St. Paul’s top team took first place overall, with New Ulm Middle School and St. Peter Lutheran School finishing in second and third, respectively. Other public and private schools from St. Peter, New Ulm, and other areas were also represented at this meet.
Individually, Nathaniel Carlovsky from St. Paul’s finished in first place, Jack Oswald from New Ulm Middle School finished in second place, and Noah Bredeson from St. Paul’s finished in third place, qualifying for state.
St. Paul’s was well represented, with 7 of the top 9 students overall. Other top finishers included Ziva Zahrt, Luther Beran, Eli Schauland, Ezra Spike, Jonah Hermanson, and Jamis Martens. St. Paul’s first-place team finish and New Ulm Middle School’s second-place finish means that their teams have qualified for the State Competition on March 10-11 at the Crown Plaza in Plymouth. This puts these nine qualifying New Ulm students in the top 150 in the state for the schools and individuals that compete.
