Minnesota BCA releases more info on Granite Falls shooting incident
GRANITE FALLS — Two law enforcement officers fired their weapons in a use-of-force incident that ended in a standoff Monday, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Investigation said.
In a news release Friday, the Minnesota BCA identified the officer injured in the incident as Willmar Police Officer Jason Hay. Hay was struck by a bullet when officers went to serve a felony arrest warrant at a Granite Falls residence, the BCA said. When officers entered the home, they were met with gunfire, and they retreated outside.
Hay was treated and released from the Granite Falls hospital. The BCA said Hay has 14 years of law enforcement experience, and is now on standard administrative leave.
The BCA said both Hay and an undercover deputy from Swift County fired their handguns during the incident in Granite Falls. The subject of the arrest warrant, William Edward Schindler, 26, was not injured in the incident, the BCA said. Schindler surrendered after a standoff, and was arrested without incident.
Evidence including firearms and cartridge casings were recovered from inside the home, and the BCA said it is also reviewing footage of the incident from squad cars and body-worn cameras.
The BCA said it is conducting an investigation of the incident at the request of the Granite Falls Police Department. Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will present its findings to the Yellow Medicine County Attorney’s Office for review.
Schindler has been charged with three counts of first degree attempted murder, three counts of first degree assault, and ineligible possession of a firearm or ammunition in connection with the incident, Yellow Medicine County court records said.
