New Ulm– The Grand is having their final Open Mic of the season this Saturday. Everyone is encouraged to attend. If you have a talent this is your opportunity to show it.

The Open Mic has been a running event for the past five months, giving local talent time to shine and be seen by the community.

Hosting the event is Gunner Beckering, who performs under the name GunnerB. He is from Worthington Minnesota and has become a local staple in Southern Minnesota as a hip-hop artist. He’s performed across America for the past 17 years as a hip-hop artist and has done several shows in New Ulm.

“Meeting the different artists 100%. I love everything about learning new art, like different art forms” Beckering said when asked his favorite part about the Open Mic night. New Ulm has a rich musical history in several different genres, and adding to local music history is a highlight of the Open Mic night. He believes people should come to support the dreams and aspirations of local artists, as not everyone has opportunities like this.

There is no sign-up necessary beforehand or at the venue. “I want people coming in off the streets with the guitar in their hand saying hey, I’m looking to perform” Beckering said. It will be free to attend, and the bar will be open.

Each performer will be given around ten minutes to perform, and any family friendly talent can be displayed. “If you want to stand on your head upside down while you’re playing a harmonica? We’re willing for anything and everything” Beckering said.

Want to perform but nervous performing in front of people? Even as a seasoned performer, GunnerB gets jitters before every performance. He believes nerves can be a good thing. “if you’re not nervous, that means you don’t care about the subject you’re about to dive into and to delve into” Beckering said. “Nervousness is for the most part a good thing, just don’t let it overwhelm you.”

The Open Mic nights have been a positive community influence and creative outlet for local artists. Beckering loves the support and appreciation the event has gotten and wants New Ulm and The Grand to know. “I just want to thank you all personally, for giving me this opportunity to do this. “I want to thank The Grand as well. The fact that everyone welcomed me with open arms for the most part is the biggest thing for me”

The event will run from 7-9 PM on Saturday, May 20th. Those looking to perform are encouraged to come early.

Starting at $4.38/week.
