Casey McMullen takes the podium to speak on behalf of the Human Rights Commission.
NEW ULM– A representative from the New Ulm Human Rights Commission spoke during public time at the New Ulm School Board meeting on Thursday.
Casey McMullen took to the podium near the end of the meeting to address concerns of LGBTQ students being singled out and racially motivated issues.
“At our most recent meeting, concerns were raised regarding the targeting of LGBTQ students by community members during the previous school board meeting.” McMullen said. “The Human Rights Commission was also contacted by a parent who shared concerns regarding what they described as an uptick in racially motivated incidents occurring within one of the community schools.”
McMullen urged that now is the time for action to ensure all students’ rights are being recognized and supported. “Being silent is not an option and we strive to actively add our voices to this ongoing plea for change.” McMullen said.
McMullen also wanted to thank the school board for the work they have put in and offered the HRC’s support.
“The HRC would like to commend the School Board for their continued efforts to support all learners, particularly those who are members of historically disenfranchised populations.” McMullen said. “As the City Commission we will be more than happy to collaborate and assist this board with their mission to provide a safe and equitable education for all students.”
In other news, New Ulm and Sleepy Eye will now be sharing an Art Teacher starting the 2023-2024 school year. They will spend the first half of the school day at New Ulm and the second half of the day in Sleepy Eye.
The art teacher will have a 50/50 contract with New Ulm and Sleepy Eye. Their costs for traveling between schools will be reimbursed. Each school would be responsible for providing the teachers equipment, supplies, and technology while they are at that school.
The motion passed unanimously.
The next study session will be 5pm Thursday, June 8 in the District conference room. The next school board meeting will be 5pm Thursday, June 22 in the District boardroom. Both will be at 414 S. Payne Street.
