First United Methodist moves down the road

The Junique Center at 125 S. Broadway previous served as the St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and starting in Feb., will be the new home to First United Methodist Church.

NEW ULM — Sunday, Jan. 28 First United Methodist will hold its last worship service at Broadway and Center Street.

On Sunday, Feb. 4, worship service will move two blocks down to the Junique Center at 125 S. Broadway. The Junique Center previously served as St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and is well known for its bright red door.

In Oct. 2019, Kathleen Backer purchased the Episcopal Church property and began renovating the building to host different events. Backer was elected New Ulm Mayor in 2022. She currently keeps an apartment beneath The Junique Center.

First United Methodist Pastor Nick Scutari said the congregation has been informed of the move and is excited to start “a new adventure.”

Over the last few weeks, the congregation has been in the process of moving two blocks down to their new location.

Broadway and Center has been the home of First United Methodist Church for nearly 100 years. The last service at this location will be held Jan. 28.

The main reason for the move is congregation size. Church membership has been shrinking and the board believed it was unnecessary to continuing maintain a large 100 year old building. In November, the church decided to move forward with a sale to New Ulm Ministerial Association (NUMAS) Haus.

Scutari said when the church decided to sell to NUMAS Haus, the congregation began discussing options for relocation. The Junique Center was an early consideration and it worked best for the congregation.

Backer felt the congregation would be comfortable in her building.

“I can seat 100 people here with room to grow,” Backer said. “I think the atmosphere is very attractive.”

The greatest challenge was bringing over the necessary supplies to hold a full service. Backer said a piano has already been moved into the sanctuary.

First United Methodist will use the Junique Center on Wednesday and Sundays, but the space will be available for others to rent Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Scutari said they do not intend anything special for their final service at Center and Broadway, just a simple send off.

Scutari said the first service at the Junique Center on Feb. 4 will be dedicated to getting it up and running. After 100 years at Broadway and Center, it will take some time to settle into the new home.

Starting at $4.38/week.
