SLEEPY EYE — Students have been rehearsing the Broadway musical “Mary Poppins” for six months.

Based on one of the most popular Disney movies of all time that has received multiple Oliver and Tony Award nominations, the production with a cast of 35 will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 5 and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6 in the Sleepy Eye High School Auditorium.

High school senior Jose Castorena said he’s excited about the show.

“It’s going to be an intense show. I like the choreography (dancing) and vocals,” he said.

Nora Coulson playing a Sister Suffragette is excited too.

“The energy everybody brings to rehearsals is really fun. (Director) George Hirschboeck is amazing. He got many young kids involved. This will affect future performances,” Coulson said.

Hirschboeck echoed student reactions.

“We’re really excited to do this. It’s something different for the community. It appeals to the young and old. There’s lots of special effects and tap dancing. It’s really great with a lot to see,” said Hirschboeck.

“Mary Poppins was chosen for its message that resonates across generations – the timeless story of family, love, acceptance, and kindness to those in need,” he said.

“As a production team, we are always striving to push the boundaries of what our students can achieve, and this show has been no exception. From the iconic tap-dancing number to the timeless songs and magical special effects, we’ve worked hard to bring this beloved story to life,” Hirschboeck said.

The cast includes Castorena as Bert, Jaelynn Schauman as Mary Poppins, Josiah Siefkes as George Banks, Megan Sellner as Winifred Banks, Camryn Maher as Jane Banks, Bransten Rehbein and Mason Schottenbauer as Michael Banks, Paige Thoms as Katie Nanna, Kenly Jensen as Mrs. Brill, Anders Coulson as Robertson Ay.
