Cruising to a milestone
Semi trailer commemorates company history
NEW ULM — Motorists may find it hard not to notice the creative, colorful news semi truck wraps and trailer murals on a number of new J & R Schugel Inc. rigs traveling across the country.
The company recently celebrated its 50th anniversary at its New Ulm site with current and prior employees.
“It was cool to see some of the former drivers talking like they never missed a minute, like they were back at it,” said J & R Schugel Marketing Coordinator Tony Helget.
To mark the milestone, the company unveiled a special 53-foot utility trailer that showcases company history, growth and achievements over the past five decades. The trailer features iconic moments, images and milestones telling the history of the company.
“Reaching 50 years in business is a testament to the dedication of our drivers, employees, and loyal customers. This utility trailer is not just a symbol of our history, but also a tribute to everyone who has been part of our journey. We’re thrilled to share our story and passion for the trucking industry with the nation,” said J & R Schugel CEO Rick Schugel.
J & R Schugel Marketing Coordinator Tony Helget designed the truck and trailer wraps with breast cancer, mental health awareness and veterans themes.
J & R Schugel Human Resources Director Courtney Antonsen said drivers submitted letters of interest in driving the new truck with a veteran-themed wrap.
“Next week, we’ll announce who will drive it,” she said.
Jerry and Rich Schugel started the trucking firm with their father Harold in 1974 with 15 trucks, 20 trailers and an idea to provide customers with quality service at a good price, hauling grain hoppers locally.
The company grew to 350 trucks and 550 refrigerated trailers in 1998. In 2005, Jerry and Rich Schugel passed the company to their sons Rick and Brad who grew the fleet to more than 600 trucks and 1,000 trailers.
In 2014, the company celebrated 40 years in business and became 100% employee-owned. About 550 drivers worked for the company headquartered in New Ulm and terminals in Wisconsin and Ohio.
Now the company has 700 trucks operating in the lower 48 states, 850 employees, 100 in the New Ulm terminal, plus a terminal in Georgia.
