SLEEPY EYE — Outgoing Mayor Wayne Pelzel was presented a plaque Tuesday for grateful appreciation for eight years of professional and dedicated service to the City of Sleepy Eye from the Sleepy Eye City Council, city staff and residents.

Pelzel did not run for re-election this fall. Sleepy Eye voters elected former city councilor Joann Schmidt as mayor by a wide margin.

“Mayor Pelzel, on behalf of the city council, we have been so grateful for your leadership and guidance the past eight years and your calm demeanor, we thank you for everything you’ve done. We’re unhappy to see you go, but we get it and we’re excited to see Joann (Schmidt) becoming mayor (in 2025),” said Andres.

“I’ve enjoyed working with all of you and the city residents. I’ve enjoyed all our relationships. I’m going to miss it, as much as I thought I wouldn’t. Thank you very much. It’s been a privilege to serve you,” said Pelzel.

Sleepy Eye Police Chief Matt Andres thanked Mayor Pelzel.

“You weren’t the mayor when I came here, but I want to thank you too. You really helped me as police chief,” said Andres.

Pelzel said he’s appreciated all the people who provided services to the City of Sleepy Eye.

“The police department deserves a lot of appreciation. And there are many more. Thank you,” he said.
