Caroling for the Food Shelf
NEW ULM — The Concord Singers led carols at Schells Brewery, Thursday during a sing-along benefit for the New Ulm Area Emergency Food Shelf.
The festive family friendly event was heard mostly in the Bierhalle, but the crowd joined in with jingle bells and applause carrying the notes of the festive German and English carols downstairs, and even outside rousing the roosting peacocks.
From the two-story beer barrel Christmas tree topped with a glowing star to the tiny mistletoe hanging over Concord keyboardist Eileen Bierk, the entire hall was decked for the holidays. There was even an appearance from Santa Claus.
The Caroling for a Cause sing-along is an annual tradition for many. Angela Novotny attended with her friends Hannah Scharf and Kelsey Fredrickson.
“I came last year, and I wanted to make it a priority,” Novotny said.
This years sing-along helped to benefit The New Ulm Area Emergency Food Shelf. The food shelf has over 300 local volunteers, and the shelf receives donations from grants and food from local grocery stores.
“There is great community support,” said Bill McLean, a member of the Food Shelf’s board.
Through fundraisers like this, and other support, the New Ulm Area Emergency Food Shelf. McLean said the food shelf has served 2,000 families of which 1,300 were children and 1,100 were seniors.
