‘Amazed at the generosity’
NUMAS Haus receives $1k grant
NEW ULM — Music for a Mission, a non-profit organization uses music to raise funds to support families, children, private education and communities in and around New Ulm awarded a $1,000 grant to NUMAS Haus Friday.
The money will be used for mental health programming at NUMAS Haus, which provides shelter and support services to homeless women and children in and around Brown County.
NUMAS Haus Board of Directors President Pastor Phil Schenk of New Ulm expressed his gratitude regarding the grant.
“We continue to be amazed at the generosity of the people of New Ulm that allows us to continue to pursue our mission. We’re able to make a long-term difference in the lives of people,” said Schenk.
“We are so thankful that Music for a Mission believes in our cause and supports NUMAS Haus and so many other organizations in our communities. Their generous grant will be designated to assist in our mental health programming costs for our families. Our families are very thankful to have this support,” said NUMAS Haus Executive Director Nicole Schmiesing.
She said NUMAS Haus is about three-fourths of the way to funding a $1.1 improvement project.
NUMAS Haus Board of Directors Vice President Tim Knaak said the grant will help NUMAS Haus complete the first two phases of the project that includes space for more families, new lights, plexiglass and frames for stained glass windows in the former First United Methodist Church building that NUMAS occupies at Center and Broadway.
NUMAS Haus has assisted several hundred women and children to help lessen the state of area homelessness since 2016. More than two-thirds of NUMAS Haus residents have completed the program and secured stable housing.
Other Music for a Mission grants awarded Friday were $3,000 to New Ulm Area Catholic Schools, $1,500 to Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Schools and $1,000 each to Ivy House, a 24/7 crisis nursery providing direct care to children up to age 10 whose families are in crisis or stressful situations and CADA (the Committee Against Domestic Abuse).
Music for a Mission will raise money for community non-profit organizations by hosting Party by the Pond Saturday, Aug. 23, at 4 Somsen St., New Ulm. The outdoor live music event features food and beverages.
