NUFD extinguishes AMPI fire

Four trucks respond to German St. North building

NEW ULM — Firefighters responded to a fire at the Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI) plant on the 100 block of German St. North Friday.

New Ulm Assistant Fire Chief Aaron Wilfahrt said firefighters were alerted of the fire at 11:25 a.m. Friday.

Four fire trucks, a ladder truck and three pumpers surrounded the AMPI building before firefighters entered the east side of the building. Some firefighters entered the structure on a fire truck ladder. Others entered through a doorway on the east side of the building

“We got the fire out within 30 minutes,” said Wilfahrt.

“It was contained to the main electrical panel. We began ventilation. There were no injuries. There was heavy smoke damage to the building,” he said.

Wilfahrt said the cause of the fire was unknown but that it was contained to a main electrical panel in the building.

Firefighters were at the scene for about 90 minutes.
