Theft by swindle suspects arrested in Olivia

Two men in Renville County Jail

OLIVIA — Police arrested two men Monday after receiving a report of an ongoing phone and computer scam involving cash demands.

The men, age 24 and 25, are in Renville County Jail custody, pending court.

Police received a report of a phone and computer scam at 11:04 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17.

A caller told police their computer was compromised and an individual had arranged for a courier to collect a substantial amount of cash. The victim handed over cash to the courier Feb. 11, according to an Olivia Police news release.

A suspect contacted the victim again on Feb. 17, demanding an additional $40,000 in cash, to be collected by a courier upon arrival.

Shortly after 1 p.m. the same day, Olivia Police got another call reporting the courier arrived at the victim’s residence. Police and Renville County Sheriff’s Deputies quickly responded to the residence and identified a nearby vehicle with out-of-state license plates occupied by two men.

Both individuals were questioned and arrested on suspicion of fraudulent activity. They are held in the Renville County Jail, pending fraud-related charges.

One of the suspects was flagged with an immigration hold by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), police said.

The case remains under active investigation with assistance from the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).

Olivia Police remind the public that scams of this nature are widespread and very sophisticated. Perpetrators are well-rehearsed and extremely convincing. Residents are urged to exercise caution and refrain from sending money or providing financial information before consulting with family, friends or local authorities.

Officers are always available to assist in verifying suspicious requests. Local bands serve as a valuable resource in identifying questionable fund transfers.
