Commissioners OK Essig highway lights

Staff photo by Fritz Busch Brown County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday authorizing a Minnesota Department of Transportation agreement for a streetlights at the intersection of Highway 14 and Brown County Highway 11.
NEW ULM — In response to a Milford Township Board request to add streetlights on Highway 14 and County Highway 11 for safety considerations, Brown County commissioners unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday authorizing a Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) agreement for an LED lighting system for the intersection just south of Carl’s Corner, a popular Essig restaurant.
The intersection was identified for rural lights in the 2012 MnDOT County Road Safety Plan.
Under the agreement, MnDOT will fund lighting system installation estimated to cost $30,000 Brown County will assume project ownership and maintenance responsibilities estimated at $600 a year.
“I think this is a very affordable and significant step for safety,” said Commissioner Dave Borchert, who seconded Tony Berg’s motion to approve the request Jan. 7.
Approval came on a motion by Commissioner Tony Berg, seconded by Jeff Veerkamp.
