Sleepy Eye City Council approves airport bid, MnDOT grant

State to pay all new mower costs due to trade-in

SLEEPY EYE — The Sleepy Eye City Council unanimously approved a Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) airport equipment grant and an airport improvement bid Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye City Manager Bob Elston said the $19,745 state grant will cover the entire cost of the new (John Deere) Frontier FM 41115 Flex Wing Grooming mower since the trade-in mower value of $2,485 covered the city’s 10% local matching requirement of the state grant. The mower will be used at the Sleepy Eye Airport.

Approval came on a motion by councilor Scott Krzmarzick, seconded by Christina Andres.

The council approved a $66,542.50 low bid by Gee Asphalt Systems, Inc., Cedar Rapids, IA for 2025 airport improvements including seal coating and crack filling.

Fahrner Asphalt Systems, Inc. of Eau Claire, WI bid $81,463.80 on the project estimated to cost $83,000.

Approval came on a motion by councilor Doug Pelzel, seconded by Nate Stevermer.

Donations including $1,032.15 to the Parks Dept. for a new lake oxygen meter from the Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club, $300 to Dyckman Library from Duncan McGreggor. Sleepy Eye Ambulance donations included $200 from Susan and Alan Hinderman in memory of Pauline Sellner, $100 from Mary Hilmer in memory of Jerry Schueler, $25 from Paula Windschitl in memory of Jon Jahnke and $10 from Larry Helget in memory of Larry Krenz.

Unanimous approval came on a motion from councilor Gary Windschitl, seconded by Stevermer.
