NEW ULM — NEW ULM — People planning to board a commercial plane after May 7 will need a REAL ID, which is a state-issued driver’s license and identification card that meets federal identification security guidelines.

REAL IDs are designed to make counterfeiting more difficult and ensure licenses and IDs meet specific requirements for boarding domestic (U.S.) flights and accessing military bases and federal buildings, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The license bureau office will require one document proving identity, date of birth and legal U.S. presence, and two documents proving Minnesota residency. The name on documents must match the name on the application.

Proof of any name change from birth to present day is required. Original or certified copies of a marriage certificate, divorce decree or dissolution of marriage, adoption decree and court-ordered name change are required.

Time can be saved by pre-applying online and uploading documents so license bureaus can verify they are correct. Pre-application enables REAL ID driver’s licenses or ID cards to be received in seven to ten business days.

Photocopies, scanned, faxed or digital images on a cell phone or other electronic device and laminated documents are not accepted, according to the DPS.

Applicants must know their social security number (SSN). Individuals without a SSN must prove they don’t need one, which usually applies to individuals not born in the U.S. and not allowed to work in the U.S.

Citizens of foreign countries may apply for a REAL ID if they have the required documents or apply for a variance, according to the DPS.

Individuals that have a REAL ID and moved to a new Minnesota residence address must apply for a duplicate or renewal of their REAL ID.

Brown County License Bureau Assistant Manager Jennifer Dukleth said clients with all the proper documents ready can apply for a REAL ID in 15 to 20 minutes and get a paper version immediately. Actual REAL ID Driver’s Licenses and ID cards are mailed to applicants in four to six weeks.

“We’re often busy with lines of people, but not always. Many people that come in have told us we run a very efficient office,” said Dukleth.
