Proposed human services cuts draw concern in Brown Co.

Commissioner asks for letter to political reps to support human services funding

NEW ULM — Brown County Human Services Director Anne Broskoff told county commissioners Tuesday that she has federal budget concerns for human services programs.

“Federal budget targets outline proposed significant cuts to human services safety net programs and other key funding that supports the operations of Brown County Human Services,” said Broskoff.

“We hear thunder, but it’s not raining yet. There is a lot of inconsistency in the air,” she said.

Broskoff said one proposal is for the elimination of the Social Services Block Grant (SSBG), which sent $152,249 to Brown County this year.

“This federal funding helps cover overhead, staffing and flexible use funds for the operation of child welfare and adult protection services,” she said.

Commissioner Brian Braun asked Broskoff to draft a letter to be sent to state political representatives asking them to support social services program funding.

The Minnesota Office of Management and Budget reports the Federal Funds Implementation Team is monitoring changes in the federal landscape that impact funding in Minnesota with tracking documents with information on temporarily disrupted and permanently cancelled federal grants at Minnesota agencies.

The disruptions and cancellations are funds that flow through state government entities and do not reflect the totality of disrupted funds across Minnesota.

As of Wednesday, April 23, funds at risk total $72,392,452 as of Wednesday. Funds cancelled total $282,531,386. Tracking documents are updated every weekday and are intended for informational use.

Minnesota receives most of its revenue from general taxes, licenses, fees, and federal grants. About 35% of the current state budget is comprised of federal grants.
