Boats return to the Potomac River for DC plane crash recovery and investigation
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — Police boats have returned to the Potomac River as part of the recovery and investigation after the United States’ deadliest aviation disaster in almost a quarter century. Two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press that more than 40 bodies have been pulled from the river as the massive recovery effort continues Friday. Investigators have already recovered recorders from the plane that collided Wednesday with an Army helicopter as it landed at Ronald Reagan National Airport next to Washington, D.C. All 67 aboard the two aircraft were killed. Federal investigators have said they would not speculate on the cause..
Colleges returning to campus sexual assault rules created during Trump’s first term
WASHINGTON (AP) — Schools and universities responding to complaints of sexual misconduct must return to policies created during President Donald Trump’s first term, with requirements for live hearings and more protections for accused students. In a memo to education institutions across the nation, the Education Department clarified that Title IX will be enforced according to a set of rules created by former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. The rules govern how complaints of misconduct are investigated and how to settle cases where students present differing accounts. Colleges have already been returning to DeVos’ 2020 rules in recent weeks after a federal judge in Kentucky overturned the Biden administration’s Title IX rules.
The convicted mother of a Michigan school shooter is seeking a new trial
PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — The first U.S. parent to be held criminally responsible for a mass school shooting committed by a child is asking a Michigan judge to throw out her involuntary manslaughter conviction. Lawyers for Jennifer Crumbley say her trial was spoiled by the prosecutor’s failure to disclose details about two major witnesses. Prosecutors had failed to turn over certain agreements with two employees at Oxford High School. They were promised that any pretrial interviews about the shooting wouldn’t be used against them. Judge Cheryl Matthews didn’t make an immediate decision during Friday’s hearing.
New York doctor indicted for prescribing abortion pill in Louisiana
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A New York doctor has been indicted by a Lousiana grand jury for allegedly prescribing an abortion pill online in the Deep South state, which has one of the strictest near-total abortion bans in the country. Dr. Margaret Carpenter and her company, Nightingale Medical were charged on Friday with criminal abortion by means of abortion-inducing drugs, a felony. The case appears to be the first instance of criminal charges against a doctor accused of sending abortion pills to another state, at least since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022 and opened the door for states to have strict anti-abortion laws.
