Remains of all 67 victims of the deadly collision near DC have been recovered

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — The remains of all 67 victims of midair collision near Reagan National Airport have been recovered. Officials said Tuesday that the chief medical examiner is still trying to positively identify one set of remains, officials said in a news release. The news came as crews continued to work to removed debris from the Potomac River, where the aircraft crashed last Wednesday night after colliding as the American Airlines flight was about to land at nearby Ronald Reagan National Airport. Sixty passengers and four crew were on the American Airlines flight, including figure skaters returning from the 2025 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita.

FBI agents sue over DOJ effort to ID employees involved in Trump-related investigations

WASHINGTON (AP) — FBI agents who participated in investigations related to President Donald Trump have sued over Justice Department efforts to develop a list of employees involved in those inquiries that agents fear could be a precursor to discipline or termination. The class-action complaint was filed Tuesday in federal court in Washington. The complaint seeks an immediate halt to the Justice Development’s plans to compile a list of investigators who participated in probes of the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol as well as Trump’s hoarding of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

Man pleads guilty to federal charges for firing gun outside Jewish temple

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A man arrested for firing a shotgun outside an upstate New York synagogue during the early months of the Israel-Hamas war has pleaded guilty to federal charges. Mufid Fawaz Alkhader was arrested in December 2023 after shots were fired outside Temple Israel of Albany. Police officials and court filings say the Iraqi-born U.S. citizen said “Free Palestine” when officers arrested him and later told investigators that he felt affected by events in the Middle East. Under a deal with prosecutors, the 29-year-old Alkhader pleaded guilty Tuesday to obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs by threat of force, brandishing a firearm during the commission of that offense and conspiring to purchase a firearm unlawfully.

Doug Collins confirmed as veterans affairs secretary as Trump Cabinet takes shape

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States has a new secretary of veterans affairs. The U.S. Senate on Tuesday confirmed Doug Collins to the job, putting the former congressman in charge of care for America’s veterans. Collins is an Iraq War veteran and has promised to cut regulations and elevate the quality of care for veterans. He told senators he understands the challenges facing veterans today who “went time and time again, deployment after deployment” to conflict zones. The Department of Veterans Affairs manages a more than $350 billion budget and oversees nearly 200 medical centers and hospitals nationwide.
