2nd federal judge in 2 days blocks Trump’s birthright citizenship order
SEATTLE (AP) — A second federal judge in two days has blocked President Donald Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship for the children of parents who are in the U.S. illegally. U.S. District Judge John Coughenour in Seattle on Thursday decried what he described as the administration’s treatment of the Constitution and said Trump was trying to change it with an executive order. The decision came just a day after a Maryland federal judge issued a nationwide pause in a separate but similar case involving immigrants’ rights groups and pregnant women whose soon-to-born children could be affected.
Trump blames ‘obsolete’ US air traffic control system for the plane and chopper collision
(AP) — President Donald Trump says he thinks last week’s deadly collision between a passenger jet and Army helicopter wouldn’t have happened if the U.S. had a more modern air traffic control computer system. Trump said during an event at the Capitol building Thursday that “a lot of mistakes happened” on Jan. 29 when an American Airlines jet collided with an Army helicopter as it was about to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C., killing all 67 people on board the two aircraft. He says the crash wouldn’t have happened if the country’s air traffic control computer system was newer, and that he plans to replace it.
Bond set at $20M for man accused in shooting at Ohio warehouse that killed 2
NEW ALBANY, Ohio (AP) — A warehouse worker said in a frantic 911 call that he was shot in the neck and then took the gun from a co-worker after he had shot several others. Two people died and four were injured in the Ohio shooting that sent panicked employees fleeing. It’s unclear what led to the Tuesday night shooting at the warehouse in New Albany. The man accused in the attack, Bruce Reginald Foster III, 28, made an initial court appearance Thursday, with bond set at $20 million. He was seeking a court-appointed lawyer and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for next week. The Franklin County Coroner’s Office said Thursday that one of the shooting victims, Shakhar Chapagai, 30, died Wednesday evening at Mount Carmel East, a Columbus hospital.
Boy Scouts see a small membership uptick after rebrand to Scouting America
IRVING, Texas (AP) — A historic rebrand of the Boy Scouts of America has been followed by a small uptick in young people joining what will now be called Scouting America. The overall gains in membership were modest — up less than 2% from the prior year. But it’s nonetheless an encouraging sign for the organization after participation plummeted during the pandemic and as the group tries to move past scandal and bankruptcy. There are just over 1 million members currently. As the organization celebrates its 115th birthday Saturday, President and CEO Roger Krone says it will continue leaning into a broad message of inclusivity.
