10 guards charged over the fatal beating of a New York inmate
UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — Ten prison guards were charged in connection with the fatal beating of a 22-year-old prison inmate, including two charged with murder. Wednesday’s charges are the second time a group of correctional officers in New York was indicted for a death behind bars this year. Other prisoners say several guards severely beat Messiah Nantwi, a prisoner at the Mid-State Correctional Facility, sending him to a hospital where he died on March 1. The Utica-area facility was one of many state prisons that was struggling to function during a three-week wildcat strike by guards.
Arson attack probe at Pa. governor’s mansion looking into suspect’s hatred of Shapiro
HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) — Authorities investigating why a man set fire to Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s official residence are probing whether the suspect targeted the Democrat because of his Jewish faith or positions on Israel’s war in Gaza. Police have said 38-year-old Cody Balmer, of Harrisburg, harbored hatred toward Shapiro. Several search warrants offered the first details to be released to the public about a potential motive for the arson attack early Sunday. Shapiro declined to discuss possible motives on Wednesday, saying that’s for prosecutors to decide. An independent expert will review security at Shapiro’s official residence. State police say the review will be a risk and vulnerability assessment following the security breach.
California sues to stop Trump from imposing sweeping tariffs
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California has filed a lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that Trump lacks the authority to impose the sweeping 10% tariff on all imports. Newsom spoke about the lawsuit in the farm-rich Central Valley, saying tariffs are driving up prices and could bring billions of dollars in damage to California, a massive exporting state. The state wants the tariffs to be immediately blocked. White House spokesperson Kush Desai slammed the lawsuit and defended the tariffs, calling them one tool at Trump’s disposal to address a national emergency that is decimating American industry and leaving its workers behind.
Powell says Federal Reserve can wait on any interest rate moves
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve can stay patient and wait to see how tariffs and other economic policies of the Trump administration play out before making any changes to interest rates, Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday. The sharp volatility in financial markets since President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs April 2, only to put most of them on hold a week later, has led to speculation about whether the Fed would soon cut its key interest rate or take other steps to calm investors. Yet the Fed is unlikely to intervene unless there is a breakdown in the market for Treasury securities or other malfunctions, economists say.
