Bernard Hugo Gulden was born February 20, 1935, in Cottonwood Township to Bernhard “Ben” and Agatha (Sprenger) Gulden. He attended grade school at St. John’s in Searles and was a graduate of Holy Trinity High School in New Ulm. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.

Bernie started his 50-year banking career in 1953, working 44 of those years at the State Bank of Gibbon.

On September 1, 1964, Bernie was united in marriage to Phyllis Filzen at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. This union blessed the couple with three children. It was very important to Bernie to be a good father and grandfather. He always provided for his family and set a good example.

Other than time with his family, Bernie enjoyed going to auctions and collecting coins. He also collected John Deere toy tractors and Napa diecast trucks. He spent countless hours tending his garden, and every year he canned many vegetables. He also had a knack for making horseradish. Bernie enjoyed reading periodicals at the library.

Bernie’s faith was always strong. He was a life-long member of St. George Catholic Church, where he was a Reader, Usher, and a Parish Council Member. He was a member of the Catholic Aid Association.

He will be missed by many. Blessed be his memory.
