Grace Ann Schugel was born October 14, 1930 in Cottonwood Township, Brown County to Michael and Appolonia (Haas) Schugel. She attended country school which was located across from her family’s farm. She met her husband, Patrick C. Fischer at a dance at the New Ulm Armory. They were united in marriage on May 8, 1950, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm. Pat and Grace enjoyed 53 years of dedicated marriage. This union was blessed with four daughters whom together they raised in Illinois and Minnesota. Grace enjoyed her 28 years of service in the St. Mary’s school lunch program. Many of the children she served still have fond memories of her. Her homemade cookies were shared and enjoyed by many of her nieces and nephews. Her favorite pastime was playing cards with friends and relatives. Grace volunteered her time at the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce and the Hospital and American Legion Auxiliary. Her Catholic faith was important to her for her entire life. She remained faithful to praying the rosary daily. She was a member of the Christian Mother’s Society, Council of Catholic Women and the St Joseph’s – St. Elizabeth’s Catholic United.

Grace is survived by her daughters, and their spouses, Mary Jane (Steve) Portner, Barb (Roger) Monson, Patti (Larry) Knisley, Kay (Tim) Garin. She was very proud of her 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Donna (Ambrose) Hoffmann; and her sister-in-law, Joanne Schugel.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Patrick; her sisters and their spouses, Marcella and Howard Kelly, Helen and Ted Waibel, Alize and Robert Zeig, her brothers and sister-in-law, Howard and Jeanette Schugel, her brother, Eugene Schugel; as well as her in-laws and their spouses, Delbert Sr and Geraldine Fischer, Luverne and Lois Fischer, and Astonia Fischer.
