Elson Eugene Winter was born September 3, 1929, in New Ulm to Carl and Lilly (Heller) Winter. Growing up in New Ulm Elson attended St. Paul’s Lutheran grade school. Elson proudly served his country during the time of the Korean war from 1950-1952. While in the service, Elson was stationed in Fort Huachuca in Arizona, Fort Worden in Washington, and the Beale Air Force Base in California before his honorable discharge. Elson met the love of his life, Irene Engel at a dance at George’s Ballroom in New Ulm, and the couple was married on September 14, 1950, in Morgan. This union blessed the couple with five sons and a daughter whom together they raised in New Ulm. While helping to raise his family, Elson worked at the New Ulm Brick and Tile yards where he mixed concrete, Hoffman Furniture where he aided in upholstery work, and later he worked for Minnesota Steel and Drum in New Ulm. Besides his work there were a variety of hobbies Elson enjoyed in life. As an avid outdoorsman, Elson enjoyed hunting deer, going on fishing trips to Northern Minnesota, and taking his children on camping trips. Elson was quite proud of his German heritage and always appreciated a good dance, or an opportunity to play his accordion. He also enjoyed working with his hands creating model airplanes, adding to his train collection, or restoring antique furniture. Although Elson was a quiet man, he made many good connections with friends and neighbors over his life. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church as well as a past member of the Campers and Trampers camping club. May these memories and countless others forever stay in the minds of those who knew him best. Blessed be his memory.
