Al was the oldest of five sons born to Eugene and Donna Mae Gramentz. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Al’s educational journey took him from Sleepy Eye Elementary to a one-room schoolhouse near Kandiyohi, before returning to Springfield, where he graduated in 1971. He briefly attended Alexandria Technical College. In 1974, he joined 3M in New Ulm, where he dedicated 35 years of service until his retirement in 2009.

On July 1, 1978, Al married Judy Buysse, and together they raised three children: Eric, Stacy (Kyle) Collins, and Shelly (Adam) Watterson. He was blessed with seven grandchildren: Brooke, Sam, Brynn, Owen, Finn, Keenan, and Korbin. “Papa” took great joy in following their schooling, activities, and texting them daily. He was passionate about his ’65 Mustang, watching all sports, TV, and telling stories to anyone who would listen.

Al is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren; brothers: Brian (Lori), Kevin (Lisa), Tim (Julie), and Troy; his sisters-in-law, Sandy (Randy) Hilbert and Kay Booth; as well as his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother and father-in-law, Cyril and Arlene Buysse.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ivy House in New Ulm or Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
